Keira signs autographs at “The Duchess” premiere in London.

Keira Knightley has often complained about the high price of fame, from the invasiveness of the paparazzi to the scrutiny over her twiggy, clavicle-dominated figure. Now, she can add one more item to the debit column: profanity-laced tirades from strangers who think they know her. At the London premiere of “The Duchess” on Wednesday, the actress revealed how she was accosted during a recent stroll in her neighborhood. “The other day I was walking down the street and was really thinking about this book I’d been sent. You know, when you’re really in another place. Somebody jumped out and went, ‘Keira Knightley!'” she says (via the London Daily Mail). “I got such a shock, I couldn’t say anything because I’d been thinking about the book, and this guy took incredible offense and started hurling the most amazing abuse. He said, ‘Who the [bleep] do you think you [bleeping] are? You’re such a [bleep].’ All this, and I’m completely on my own.” Knightley, who was shadowed by a bodyguard and boyfriend Rupert Friend as she greeted fans on the red carpet, then sighs, “It’s a weird thing to have to deal with, not on a day-to-day basis, but it’s happened enough to make me quite jumpy.”

What does a pop star have in common with a carton of milk? They both have expiration dates, at least according to Beyoncé, who tells the British edition of Marie Clare that she has a slightly more ambitious career trajectory in mind. While chart-toppers may have a sell-by date, “being a legend, an icon, absolutely not. And, at this point, that’s what I’m trying to do,” she says. “I’m over being a pop star. I don’t wanna be a hot girl. I wanna be iconic.” Mrs. Jay-Z opines that she’s “accomplished a lot. I feel like I’m highly respected, which is more important than any award or any amount of records. And I feel like there comes a point when being a pop star is not enough.” To that end, Beyoncé, 27, channels her dark and addictive side to portray Etta James in the upcoming drama “Cadillac Records.” “People are going to be very shocked,” she says of the role. “It’s the complete opposite of me.” And while her little sister, Solange, appears eager to distance herself from her more famous sibling, Beyoncé believes her success could help those who come after her. “I am really proud that I am one of the artists that has the opportunity to be on magazine covers and to be in the movies,” she notes. “And I do think that I’m opening doors for more black women, just like Halle [Berry] and Diana Ross opened doors for me.”

Looks like the titular directive of the forthcoming flick “How to Lose Friends & Alienate People” was taken to heart during filming. The writer of the book on which the movie is based tells Britain’s Spectator that leading lady Kirsten Dunst requested that he make himself scarce during production. Why? “She overheard me giving the producer a ‘note’ on her performance in a particular scene. I felt that she hadn’t fully grasped what was supposed to be going on and that she ought to be enlightened,” explains self-delighted author Toby Young, who appears unaware that unsolicited input from a buttinsky, non-actor type might be a tad insulting. “At the time, I didn’t think of it as a criticism, more as a helpful bit of advice, and the producer took it in that spirit.” Dunst, however, “overheard this exchange and interpreted it as a complaint about her acting ability,” he says (Young didn’t write the screenplay, by the way). “It was after this, apparently, that she took [the director] to one side and asked if I could be kept at arm’s length in future.” Not being kept at arm’s length by Kirsten: Justin Long, who looks like he’s over his bust-up with Drew Barrymore. Not only were the rumored make-out partners photographed yukking it up during lunch at the Chateau Marmont last weekend, but People reports they recently attended back-to-back concerts by indie folkster Meiko.
